The Records Management Song

I am passionate about records management (other semantics are available), I adore Billy Connolly, aka The Big Yin’s Glasgwegian humour, and I have had the honour of being described as the Billy Connolly of Records Management hence my twitter name- @akaIRMbigyin. In celebration of all of these, and prompted by a rib-achingly funny evening at the Glasgow Armadillo with Billy Connolly this evening (29th Oct, 2014), I would like to share with you ……

THE RECORDS MANAGEMENT SONG
To the tune of the Welly Boot Song, Billy Connolly
New lyrics by Heather Jack
(translation available on request)

If it wisnae for good records, where would you be?
You’d be in compliance breach cos of rubbish quality
Cause you couldnae prove whit you had done to audit or HSE
If you didnae keep good records for your business

Records they are wonderful, oh records they are swell,
Cause they protect your clients and your company as well
And when you’re sitting in a court, you can always tell,
When a case is lost through lack of trusted records

When you are working mobily and oot on client site
And misunderstood security means to files you have no right
You’ll question “smarter working” cos it seems a load of …..pants
Cos no one planned smart access to the records

There’s records managers and SIROs, there’s archivists an a’,
There’s analysts and IT support, all for one and one for all
If we don’t work together then oor business willnae graw
Cos business risk is tied up with its records.

Now the DPA & FOISA & PRSA an a’
Their spirit is pure dead brilliant, and when translated it can be saw
But just a tick box exercise, no real compliance with the law
And real harm can come for want of decent records

Noo , I can file and you can file and he can file and a’
But none can find if we don’t have consistent filing law
People’s rights and justice, economy and a’
They all will thrive if we can keep good records.

If it wasnae for good records, where would you be?
You’d be in compliance breach cos of rubbish quality
Cause you couldnae prove whit you had done to audit or HSE
If you didnae keep good records for your business

Closing remarks:
The Big Yin has an uncanny knack of infusing familiar life experiences from banal to tragic, to cringingly embarrassing with comedic genius – he makes an amazing impact – he makes me laugh AND he makes me think …. and that is why he is my Records Management muse …
